Big Sisters was established in 1917 as a 501c3 organization with the mission to help young women in Chicagoland both financially and spiritually. During our 100 + year history we have helped hundreds of young women attend Catholic High Schools through our scholarship program, provided financial support to Arts of Living, an organization that assists teenage moms and their newborn babies and supported many Catholic Charities of Chicago programs and helped fund other enrichment programs that help young women in our communities.
We host two large events annually – a Christmas Brunch with a Silent Auction and a Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show. We are always looking for additional opportunities for fundraising and may have additional events in the future. We accomplish our goals through the support of a very dedicated membership and an active Board of Directors and volunteers. Becoming a member of Big Sisters is very rewarding. Your dues will help defray the operational “back of house” expenses and help fund scholarships and other opportunities to support young women in Chicagoland. While no one is compensated for their time, we do have expenses like postage, printing, etc. Our Board of Directors meets monthly between September and June of each year and we welcome members to attend meetings. You may become as active as you would like as a member – volunteer to help with an event, join a committee or even think about a leadership role by joining the Board of Directors. Your level of involvement is up to you. We would certainly love to broaden our base of volunteer members so we can help even more young women in our communities. There is nothing like receiving a letter from a scholarship recipient sharing with us that the support from Big Sisters helped her achieve her goals or positively impacted her life. Women supporting future generations of young women who may be at risk without opportunities Big Sisters can help provide is very powerful and extremely rewarding.
